Spring has Sprung......Safety Driving Tips

Spring has finally arrived and motorists may think since the snow has melted they can be worry free of dangerous driving conditions. However, with the warming weather a whole new set of challenges arise. Potholes, wet roads and high winds can all be contributing factors that make driving just as grueling as in the winter season. Here are a few tips to keep safe this spring:

Check your tire pressure. Most often for every 4 degrees in
temperature change, your tire pressure changes 1 PSI. Also,
check for wear or signs of rot to ensure that your tires are in
good condition for spring temperatures.

The warmer weather also brings out wildlife. The soil near highways melt quicker and aids
in plant growth. This is perfect forage grounds for all types of wildlife but is dangerous to drivers.

Also, does can have their fawn as early as February into June. When pregnant they forage more and move slowly making them less likely
to move out of the way of vehicles.

Rain most commonly happens during spring
months. This can make for slippery road conditions, hydroplaning and reduced visibility.
Slow down and allow for ample stopping distance. Also make sure that your wipers are in working condition and reduce your speed going through large puddles on the highway.

As it gets warmer people head outdoors to enjoy the weather. Cyclists, playing children, joggers, motorcyclists and other recreational vehicle users start to share our highways and can be an unseen hazard. Always stay alert to pedestrians and less visible motorists. Adjust your speed and be aware of your surroundings.

Spring is the beginning of construction season. Road construction can be
a nuisance for the driver but it's a hazard to road work crews.  By simply slowing down, keeping a safe distance and paying attention to flags and signs can reduce accidents and potential fatalities. Try to stay patient
and calm!

These are just a few safety driving tips. Every season has it's challenges and as drivers we must be aware of the conditions around us and adjust to them.

Trucker Relationships: Love and Life On and Off The Road

Trucker Relationships

Trucking is a difficult profession and many stresses come with it; long hours on the road, dangerous conditions, being away from home and loved ones and a feeling of isolation while away. Relationships are hard enough as it is and it takes two very strong people that are truly committed to each other to build a healthy and lasting relationship in the face of such adversities.

The reality of it is, couples CAN find a way to make it work, it just takes some effort and a lot of understanding.

TALK EVERY DAY! Minimum one phone call a day, this is an opportunity to talk about daily events and to reaffirm your relationship. Even if it's a short conversation, being able to hear each others voices and keep connected to whats going on with life on and off the road is important. Whether it's what's going on with the kids, or how work was that day, communication is key to any relationship. Also, trucking can be lonely, both for the driver and their partner, having a chat with your loved one may mean more to them than you realize. And EVERYONE can make time for a phone call - if someone means something to you than you make the time!

Spend time together....as much as possible! Since your trucker is gone for long periods of time, you may get to feeling lonely and neglected. When they are home plan date nights - even if you have children make sure to have some time for just the two of you. Rebuilding your bond is important to maintaining your relationship. If you have children also spend family days together. Naturally people/children change and evolve as time goes by and being out on the road means that moments of growth and development are missed, so being able to spend time together will help you reconnect to your loved ones.

Try not to sweat the small stuff! When your trucker gets home they may disrupt your daily routine you've established while they're away. You've been used to running the household, chores, work, kids and everything else that's thrown at you and it may be natural to take some of that frustration out and demand a helping hand or affirmation for all the hard work you've done. However, being on the road is also very stressful and once your trucker is home they may want some downtime to relax. Try not to take frustrations out on each other. Find a way to calmly discuss how you're feeling or the challenges that you've faced while away from each other and come up with solutions together. Don't waste time arguing with each other or hold grudges as time truly is precious not only in life but especially when your partner works away from home for long periods of time!

Every couple is different and have their own ways of bridging the gaps when away from each other. In the end it comes down to your commitment to each other and making the effort to keep the relationship alive no matter how near or far apart you are in this world!

Trucking: Tips to Staying Healthy on the Road!

Now that 2015 has come and gone, we look forward to 2016 and what it has in store for us. With the dawning of a new year spurs resolutions, and one of the most popular is health and fitness. Every new year we all strive to lose weight, exercise more, eat right and just keep fit, but usually by spring most of us have lost the momentum and return to our old habits.
If you work in the transportation industry and spend long hours driving and living in your truck you may argue that having time to eat right and exercise is impossible. But nothing is ever impossible, so here are a few ideas to help you keep fit and healthy in 2016!

1. Eat Right

Try to avoid fast food restaurants or buying chips or sugary snacks while on the road. If fast food is your only option order salads or grilled chicken or fish items. Avoid anything battered and deep fried or foods loaded with cheeses or sauces. Try to pack your own food for your trip, include dried fruits, nuts, canned goods such as beans, vegetables and fish. Also have plenty of veggie and fruit juices along with water to help keep you hydrated and get your vitamins in. Be sure to watch your portion size, try eating small meals throughout the day instead of big meals at the end of the day and make sure to eat breakfast!

2. Exercise

Doing traditional exercises is more difficult to do while on the road but there are still ways to get your daily workout in. If you don't want to go for a run during a rest period a walk can be just as beneficial. Try walking at a moderate pace for at least 15 minutes and do simple leg and arm stretches, as long as you're moving your body and able to raise your heart rate you will benefit from these aerobic exercises. Weight training is also very beneficial and easier than you think to do on the road. Bring a set of dumbbells with you and during your rest periods do 12-15 reps, this will help in achieving a full body workout. So any opportunity that you have, keep your body moving!

3. Exercise your Mind

Just as exercising your body is important, so is exercising your mind. While on the road you can bring with you audio books or music to listen to in order to keep your mind stimulated and help reduce boredom.

4. Sleep

Sleep is key to resting your body and mind! Try to get at least 8 hours of sleep every night. If you have difficulty sleeping on the road bring ear plugs and a sleeping mask to help block out noise and light. Avoid exercising and eating at least 3-4 hours before heading to bed and try to keep your sleeping area clean and at a cooler temperature.

These are just a few tips to incorporate into your daily routine that will help improve your health and fitness while on the road. And if these tips still seem a bit overwhelming start with small goals and just remember, where there's a will....there's a way!
