Winter Driving Tips for Truck Drivers

Winter can be dangerous for driving conditions and whether you are a new or seasoned driver             being prepared will help increase your odds of staying safe. Here are a few tips:

    1. Watch for Black Ice - black ice is a thin layer of ice that forms when temperatures are near             freezing. Slow down when approaching bridges, overpasses and shaded areas that are more
susceptible to freezing sooner than other areas in cold weather.

    2. Wear sturdy shoes or boots that have good traction - icy conditions, slush and deep snow
can make even the simplest tasks hazardous. Good foot wear will help you stay upright and                 keep your feet warm.

    3. Make sure you have the supplies you need -  If you end up getting stuck, wrecked or just               sitting, be sure you have the supplies you need with you. Items such as extra warm clothing,               blankets, canned food and water should be in your truck. Be sure to also keep your diesel tanks full     so you don't run out!

    4. Carry a cell phone and make sure it is charged - Your phone can freeze in the cold                         weather, so don’t leave your phone exposed for long periods of time.

    5. Drop your speed to match road conditions - No matter how many times you've driven down
the same road or how many years experience you have under your belt, dangerous road conditions     are unpredictable!

    6. Don’t follow too close - Traffic will slow down and get congested when roads are bad –                   keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you as not only may the roads be unpredictable
but drivers actions may be as well.

    7. Tire Chains -  Be sure that your chains fit your tires properly and practice putting them before         you need to use them. If you can, stop at a weigh station or rest area to put on your chains so you         are safely o ff the road and have room.

    8. There is no load that is worth your life - If driving conditions are hazardous simply try to
find a safe location to stop and wait it out.

"Highways To Hell" - Haunted Sightings on North American Roads

Since it's Halloween this weekend, I felt compelled to write something of the "supernatural" to get in the spirit! Personally, I love Halloween, the costumes, the myths, the curiosity of other worldly entities, this has always peaked my interest! As I decided to write this Blog I started to research haunted and strange occurrences that drivers have reported and some fabled "Highways to Hell"! What I came across was quite spooktacular....

Route 666.....Highway to Hell

Route 666 is the 6th branch of Route 66  that runs through four states in the west. It stretches out 200 miles long and traverses through Colorado, New Mexico and ends in Utah.

Many people have reported strange encounters with spirits along this highway. One woman recalls an incident where her and her husband were driving down the highway and saw an on coming truck on fire and doing speeds of over 130 miles per hour. The tires were sparking and flames were coming from it's stacks, then the apparition vanished. Another spirit that has been reported several times is that of a young girl in a white nightgown that wanders aimlessly down the highway. When people stop to call out to her or offer their help she vanishes into thin air.

Clinton Rd., New Jersey, Dead Man's Bridge: Legend of the Ghost Boy

Legend has that if you drive down Clinton road and throw pennies off of Dead Mans Bridge into the lake below that the ghost of a young boy will throw the pennies back at you. This legend stems from the story that a little boy was walking along the road and was hit by a car as he was picking up a quarter. There is no documented evidence if this is really the way the child died but people that have visited the bridge claim they've experienced interactions with his spirit.

Tri-County Truck Stop, Villa Ridge, MO

This once thriving roadside icon closed its doors in 2006, but still remains a destination for paranormal investigators. Before it closed down, employees and customers alike reported apparitions, objects levitating, voices, shadowy figures and other foreboding paranormal activity.                                                                             The truck stop still remains vacant and no one     has wanted to revive this historic landmark....and even if someone did, there's no way to know if     the ghostly tenants would welcome new owners!

Port Perry Ghost Road, Scugog Island, Ont. CA
aka Mississauga Trail

Legend has it that back in the 1950's a motorcyclist crashed and died on this stretch of highway. Since that tragic day, motorists claim they see a motorcycle following them with it's light flashing brightly in their rear view mirror. The light quickly catches up to them, then passes their vehicle and completely vanishes. Other motorists report a white and small red light that roams up and down the highway, but these lights aren't part of any type of vehicle.

Whether these stories are fact or fiction, the more I researched this topic the more I realized there are claims of supernatural stories from all around the globe. There are even books written describing paranormal encounters that truckers have experienced whilst out on the road! So whether you're a believer or a skeptic, the chances are, we aren't alone in this vast universe. Happy Halloween!!!

"Back To The Future" - Evolution of the Transportation Industry

Remember the movie trilogy  "Back To The Future"? Well today would mark the day that Marty McFly and Doc Brown travel in their infamous Delorean to our current day! The promises of hover boards and flying cars never quite came to reality but there would be several notable changes to the evolution of our society from 1955 to 2015. The most obvious would be our technological advances such as computers, Internet, and mobile phones. Doc Brown would have surely been in awe at the marvels of so much information at our fingertips! But it's not only our technology that has evolved over the last 60 years, so has the transportation industry!

During the 1950's, Marty and Doc would been looking at diesel fuel prices of 14.9 cents a gallon and trucks with refrigerated trailers running on propane and diesel in order to keep their frozen goods on ice. It would have also been rarer for long-haul trucks to be seen driving around small town America. It wasn't until the 1960's that the U.S. Interstate Systems started to expand allowing cities and small towns to be connected making for delivery routes. By the 1970's trucking was seen as a "rockstar" way of life with movies and songs glamorizing life on the road! Even though the 70's boasted a lot of glitz and glam for the industry, beneath that, a movement was being made to deregulate a standing law that would make way to an insurgence of new drivers and carriers. By 1980, the Motor Carrier Act was deregulated and the new Act now prohibited rate bureaus from interfering with any carriers rights to publish its own rates, it also eliminated most restrictions on commodities that could be carried and deregulated the routes that carriers could use and the geographical regions that they could serve. As a result of this, there was a large increase in transportation companies and drivers! By 1990 there were more than forty thousand licensed carriers in the U.S., that was more than doubled than what it was back in the 1980's. Moving forward into the 21st Century, the transportation industry continues to grow in leaps and bounds. Long-haul trucks are seen on our highways daily and over 70% of 11 billion tons of freight is moved by trucks. The United States alone has over 750,000 motor carriers and a Global Insights study predicted in 2014 a shortage of drivers requiring an additional 111,000 jobs! So not only has trucking evolved, it has grown into one of the largest means of transporting goods globally. Who knows what the future has in store, maybe we will eventually have flying trucks like in the movies and take the transportation industry to a whole new level! Imagine that......GREAT SCOTT!!!

"What Would Really Happen If Trucks Stopped?"

The trucking industry has been part of our culture for several decades and was most popularized back in the 1970's with movies and songs depicting life on the road in a big rig. Movies like "Smokey and the Bandit" made trucking look like a thrill ride, with car chases and outlandish shenanigans in order to outsmart "the law". But what Hollywood didn't show us is the great importance that our industry has on a global scale and that this profession isn't one to be taken so lightly.

I came across this interesting Inforgraphic and it really does reiterate the importance of the transportation industry. According to the infograph our civilization as a whole would cease to function in less than a month if trucks stopped delivering goods. Really think about that....in only one month, 30 days, 4 weeks, society as we know it would be turned upside down! We would run out of medical supplies and medicine leading to an increase in illnesses and possible deaths. Our service stations would run out of fuel and travel would no longer be available. ATM's and banks would eventually run out of cash leaving our economy in shambles. Food shortages would lend to consumer panic and not to mention that cities would be overwrought with garbage. Now I know all of this may sound a bit over-dramatic at first, but the reality of it is that the trucking industry and the men and women that do this profession have a huge impact on all of  our lives, even more than you may have realized.

So the next time that you're driving down the highway and you see a "big rig", give them your respect and share the roads! They are the ones working day and night to make sure that you and your family are fed, have fuel, medicine and all of the creature comforts you've become accustomed to!

"Razor" - The Story of Keystone Western's company mascot!

“RAZOR” – The story of our company mascot.
In March of 2011 in sub-freezing temperatures “Razor”, a stray cat, was found meowing/crying in a corner of our outdoor storage facility at our terminal in Winnipeg.

She had frozen both ears and her tail and was nearing starvation. The driver that found her brought her into our maintenance shop where they then rushed “Razor” to a vet and they were able to bring her back to health, but only after having to remove her frost-bitten areas. She was aptly named “Razor” after seeing her clipped ears and tail. The decision was made to take her into our care permanently and several employees helped with her recuperation by donating food, toys, and money to go towards her medical expenses.

A year later, “Razor” became pregnant and was found trying to give birth to her litter of kittens, however, she was unable to deliver them and had to be rushed to the vet as she had become septic and had to have her kittens surgically removed. Tragically none of the kittens survived. “Razor” then spent a week at the vet trying to recover from this traumatic event.

“Razor” now remains a strong, comfortable well-fed (she’s a great mouser) member of the Keystone Western family. She’s a great example of overcoming obstacles through challenging times and her story demonstrates the kindness and compassion that our employees have to offer, right down to the smallest member of our family.

In honor of “Razor” we are developing a look-alike toy version of her so we could share her story of courage and fortitude with our friends and customers.

We would also like to encourage you to donate to your local pet rescue centre.

Keystone Western and Arctic Cat sign multi-year service agreement

Winnipeg, MB Canada April 1, 2015 – A service performance agreement was recently signed between Keystone Western Inc., with head office and terminal facilities in Grande Pointe, MB., and Arctic Cat Inc. of Thief River Falls, MN., to provide single- source storage and distribution services to all Arctic Cat dealers across Canada.

“Our production growth and plans for 2015 required us to free up space to allow for plant expansion”, says Dave Paulson – Traffic Manager for Arctic Cat. “Keystone Western has been an excellent service provider for several years and with their warehousing facilities centrally located in Winnipeg, MB it made sense for us to move our Canadian dealer inventory there and have them distribute directly to our dealers”. Norm Curtis, CEO and Owner of Keystone Western, states that the multi-year agreement has built in mutually agreed to KPI targets for on-time service performance and overall cost reduction. “To help ensure we achieve the results Arctic Cat is expecting from us we have invested in additional trailers, expanded our regional driver fleet, added additional yard and warehouse space and have dedicated customer service staff to build orders directly from their SAP system, schedule delivery dates and communicate directly with their dealers”.
